Talking Business

My name is Evan Carmichael and I believe that the fastest and most effective way to build a company is to model the strategies of people who have already successfully accomplished what you’re trying to do. As part of a what will hopefully become a regular series on the TELUS Talks Business blog I’m going to be sharing the stories of famous entrepreneurs along with their wisdom to help you transform your business. Today I’m going to focus on Apple founder Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs 2.jpg

Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs (born February 24, 1955) is an American business tycoon, and the co-founder and chief executive officer of Apple. His current net worth is $5.5 billion.

Must Watch Video

One of my favourite YouTube videos of all time is of Steve Jobs giving advice to Stanford University graduates. It’s 14:34 minutes long and is a must see for every entrepreneur:

#1) Don’t Lose Faith

“You have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future,” says Jobs. “You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”

When Steve Jobs was 17 years old he dropped out of university and began taking classes like calligraphy that were more closely tied to his interests. “I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out ok,” he recalls. “It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.”

A decade later, when Jobs was designing the first Apple Macintosh computer he put his calligraphy lessons to use by incorporating the fonts he learned about. “It was the first computer with beautiful typography,” says Jobs. “If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do… Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.”

#2) Don’t Settle

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do,” says Jobs. “If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle… As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.”

When Jobs was 17 years old, he read a quote that would stay with him forever: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right.” Since then, he has looked himself in the mirror every morning and asked himself whether or not he would do the same thing that day if it were his last day alive. “Whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something,” he says.

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you want to become. Everything else is secondary,” he advises. “Don't be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people's thinking… Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.”

#3) Innovate

“Innovation is the distinction between a leader and a follower,” says Jobs.

Throughout his career Steve Jobs has been an innovator. From the Macintosh to the iPod to the iPhone and now the iPad, he is constantly pushing the envelope to put his company on the forefront of innovation.  “When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D,” he recalls. “It's not about money. It's about the people you have, how you're led, and how much you get it."

“Innovation comes from people meeting in the hallways or calling each other at 10:30 at night with a new idea, or because they realized something that shoots holes in how we’ve been thinking about a problem,” says Jobs. “It’s ad hoc meetings of six people called by someone who thinks he has figured out the coolest new thing ever and who wants to know what other people think of his idea.”

True Story

When Steve Jobs was in high school he called Hewlett-Packard co-founder William Hewlett to ask for parts for a school project. Hewlett gave him the parts and a summer job where he met Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

This is a really good article.  When he said "The only way to do great work is to love what you do," he was not joking.  I love software.  I like to learn all there is to know about different applications and use it to it's potential.  I have a job where I use that talent somewhat, but it is not exactly what I want to do forever.  It helped to read “If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle… As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.”  I am going to keep on trying to find my dream job!!  Thanks for this blog!

It's a very inspiring article. I am in the process of becoming an entrepreneur and creating a dream job for myself and I'm glad that I agree with every single word Steve says. It makes me feel alright despite all the challenges and helps me disregard all the negative reactions coming from so-called "society", you know, unhappy people who settled and who know for sure their dreams will never come true. Thank you Evan for another reminder.

This article reminds me of the Three Circles mentioned in the famous book - Good to Great. I started my PR business after been an editor of China Computerworld Weekly. I love my job - being a communicator for others. And I admire the way Steve Jobs communicates with others.

While it is not simple to run a business, there are something basic we have to keep in mind and tell ourselves everyday, such as Don’t Lose Faith, Don’t Settle, and Innovate.

Thank you, Evan!

One thing I forgot to say when I posted a comment earlier is don't forget the people who work hard, love their job and do great work.  Appreciate them by telling them every once in a while what I value they are to the company.  With today's stress/economy it helps to hear what an employer feels about your work, even though you know you are doing a wonderful job!!

Wow, what an amazing story and it came at such a great time for me. I have been driven for years towards a desire to work for myself and a year and a half ago I was laid off and instead of looking for a job that I would be unhappy at I took the open door to start my own business. It has been a great struggle and I have at many times been close to giving up. This speech has given me inspiration to keep moving forward with my dreams and desires. I have a 5 year old son who is my world. I get a little nervous from time to time worried that I might fail however I know that I must keep the faith and keep moving towards my goals, afterall I have never been let down by the universe before why would it happen now. It wouldn't. I hope this message of Steve's life touches many people who are in the same posistion that I am in now and the same position Steve was once in. I love what I do and I am following my dreams and desires there is no room for failure. This was a great reminder for me to keep pushing on. Next month I have some changes that are going to take place which will cause me to need even more money to live and I am keeping the faith that all is well and all will work out. Thanks Evan for posting this post as it is a great reminder to have faith and move forward without fear.

Sergiy - don't let the naysayers get you down! Imagine what the world would look like today if Steve Jobs didn't believe in himself and never started Apple!

Great comment Fred - Good to Great is a must read for every entrepreneur!

May 11, 2010 2:17 PM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to brodnax2008:

Good luck Susan! Year 2 can often be the make or break year for many businesses. The newness and excitement from Year 1 has wore off and now it's time to get to work!

Keep us posted with your progress and plow through those challenges next month - what a great life lesson to give to your son! Go get 'em!

May 11, 2010 2:25 PM happyworker happyworker    says:

Good post - Steve Jobs is quite the case study in entrepreneurialism... from his start at HP during high school, then the early days at Apple, leaving to NeXT, then buying Pixar, and finally Apple again.

Apple's product innovations I find most interesting are those that weren't successful, like the Lisa, the Mac portable and the Newton. Plus the rebirths, like the NeXT cube reinvented as the Mac cube. Interesting that Job's new innovation strategy in the last decade appears to be to wait for others to create the market, then enter in a major push to dominate.

Great comment Kris!

You don't have to be first to be successful in business as long as you can execute better than those who came before you.

May 11, 2010 2:39 PM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to advertel:

"I won't lose faith. I won't settle. And I will continue to innovate."

Sean - Sounds like you need to stick that up on the wall in front of you and look at it every day just like Steve Jobs looked at himself in the mirror every day.

Evan,

Thanks so much for this great video of Steve Jobs!  He definately followed his passion as I am doing as an entrepreneur in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  I particularly like the part about karma and trusting your instincts...karma or whatever and just going for it!   Believing it will work out is part of the challenge..for business owners.  Also, it is definately about the people you lead.....and surround yourself with.  I really enjoyed listening to this motivational business tycoon and how he took risks to get to where he is today.

Thanks....Lana Larder

May 11, 2010 3:02 PM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to HalifaxFinance:

Lana - great to hear from you!

If you ever find yourself in a rut and are having a hard time getting motivated come back to this video and give it another watch! Good luck!

Evan

I only recently found you and your site (yes, I'm slow but it's an age thing I think ), and I thought that was wonderful enough. But now this!

A truly inspiring video and yes, I know if I was to ask myself the 'death' question every day I certainly wouldn't be doing many of the things I do. Guess now's the time for change.

Thanks so much for this.

May 11, 2010 3:44 PM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to San:

San - Better late than never!

I hope this is a new beginning for you - very exciting! Good luck on your new journey!

May 11, 2010 3:54 PM brodnax2008 brodnax2008    says in response to EvanCarmichael:

Thanks Evan. I have my first update. Shortly after I read your post and watched the video I got a phone call from a client I have done some work for. She didn't have much to pay me for my work I have done for her over the past few months however I believe a great deal in what she is doing and the direction she is taking her business. Anyway, I knew that some day the work I am doing for her would pay off through her or through a different source, I didn't know how or when I just knew it would. Well, she called me and informed me that her business has an opportunity to purchase another business that would skyrocket her business. With her new business deal she will need my services and will be able to pay me a great deal more (this could be my solution to the obstacles I needed to find a solution for next month). Nothing is set in stone just yet but I have faith.

For any of you reading this blog today I just want to tell you never give up and always invite opportunity in when it comes knocking it might not look like opportunity at first but at the end of the day everything is opportunity. I am so happy I never gave up, sure I haven't hit my goal just yet but every day I get closer and closer and the days I get discouraged I come across blog posts like this one that inspires me to keep going.

May 11, 2010 4:05 PM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to brodnax2008:

Susan - what great news! Congratulations and keep at it!

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you that the deal works out and even better ones come your way as well!

May 12, 2010 1:27 AM vjagra vjagra    says:

Thanks Evan, for this wonderful article. The traits of successful people are always inspiring. Faith or confidence is a virtue without which success can only be accidental.

I think when Jobs talks of "Don't Settle", he is effectively saying get out of the "comfort zone"  -- that acts as a powerful force and maintains status quo. In order to succeed, you need to let go of the "comfort zone" of your present status. The moment you step away from it you are unsettled and you have to "innovate" -- it becomes a positive cycle and you roll on the path of achievement. His model is truly realistic and worth following.

Thanks for the great post. Look forward to more such articles from you.

May 12, 2010 1:31 AM hamody hamody    says:

Great motivating people like Steve Jobs ought to be speaking to millions across the world so that the word impossible can be redefined.

May 12, 2010 8:31 AM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to vjagra:

Great comment Vijay - I love your take on Jobs' speech.

As for the series, it looks like it's going to happen - stay tuned!

May 12, 2010 8:33 AM EvanCarmichael EvanCarmichael    says in response to hamody:

Mohammed - it's actually really tough to find great videos from founders of big companies like Apple that are as inspiring as the one I've included in this post. If you have any other favourites, let me know!

Entrepreneurs like Jobs are typically more concerned with creating revolutionary products and running their businesses instead of going on a speaking tour which makes this Steve Jobs video even more special.

Funny enough I woke up today feeling so uninspired and I remembered that you had sent out this email a little while back (asked you today on twitter lol) so I figured what the heck lemme watch it.  The timing has never been so perfect and I am glad I did.  I do not know what will change specifically now that I have watched this video but I can already feel and know something will. One day in the future I will look back to this very moment and the dots will connect.
