Do You Find it Easy to Switch Off During The Holiday Season?

With Christmas only a few days away a lot of small business owners will be finding it hard to switch off for a couple of days and take the time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. I can relate to this but discovered for myself that if we walk away from our laptops, our smartphones, and our office the world will not end! Obviously you have to tie up any lose ends that have to be taken care of before you take a few days holiday but, once you have done that, walk away with a positive attitude knowing you will be back to work in a few days.

Here are a few fun things you can do during the holiday season that will help you relax and you will feel rested and ready to go once you return to work:

  • Enjoy an extra couple of hours sleep in the morning and wake up refreshed. It has been proven that less than 8 hours sleep can lead to health issues.
  • Go for a walk and enjoy the Christmas lights that are helping brighten the dark winter nights. Walking is great exercise and blows away those cobwebs leaving you feeling energetic and wide awake.
  • Have fun in the kitchen baking cookies with your family and get to know each other again. Sharing fun chores such as cooking brings families closer together.
  • Plan a movie night with family members and sip hot chocolate, nibble a few candies and laugh with each other. Laughing is a great way to relieve stress.

Remember that Christmas is not about spending lots of money and making sure you give the best gifts. This is a time to realise you are blessed to have a roof over your head, food on the table and family and friends with you. Smiles and hugs can fill Christmas stockings to the brim and will last a lifetime and offer you a wealth of happy memories.

You can switch off during the holiday season and you will enjoy it as much as I do, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to you all.

Absolutely, I've always been a firm believer in taking a day for yourself.  Granted with family obligations, fatherhood, etc. its harder as each year passes - but taking time for oneself is keen to maintaining sanity.

From a work perspective, its important to establish boundaries with colleagues and managers from the beginning.  If you don't set these boundaries and expectations of your availabilities early on, it becomes an expectation that you are always available to work on anything anytime day or night, even when you're on vacation.
